The Hunter region on the central New South Wales coast encompasses the City of Newcastle, Port Stephens and the world famous wine growing region of the Hunter Valley. It is located about an hour and a half’s drive north of Sydney and is a popular destination for Sydneysiders to visit for a weekend away or a short break. There is a multi lane motorway connecting the two regions and most visitors tend to drive or take the train. Newcastle was originally Australia's major steel producing city but the cessation of this industry has changed the face of the city. The port is thriving as millions of tons of high quality coal is exported from here to China and Japan to fuel the furnaces of industry there.
To the north, and only a forty minute drive away, are the beautiful seaside resort towns surrounding Port Stephens. This region has everything. There is a beautiful harbour, quiet inland waterways and fantastic surfing beaches. Nelson Bay, Corlette, Tea Gardens, Lemon Tree passage and a host of other small towns create a wonderful holiday ambience. There is the opportunity to engage in lots of holiday activities like golf, boating, fishing, sailing, surfing and swimming. It is an outdoor lover's paradise. There is an annual game fishing tournament that attracts participants from all along the coast. Port Stephens has a number of excellent resorts and day spas and these make it the ideal place to relax with the whole family.
The Hunter Valley region extends inland from Newcastle. There are hundreds of fantastic vineyards and dozens of cellar doors just waiting for you to rock up and sample the local produce. The Hunter Valley is now a trendy holiday destination and there are several new resorts catering for the hoi polloi and the well heeled business men who visit from the cities. Some of the newer resorts are fantastic and don't forget to take your golf clubs to try out one of the new resort layouts. Fine dining and sensational local wines are the hallmarks of the Hunter Valley so don't come without your favourite credit card.
The Hunter region is the ideal destination for a relaxing weekend tasting the new season's vintage.
